Gifts of Encouragement

Cancer Kickin' Cowgirl Bear
I am a two-time breast cancer survivor, and happy and thankful to be one.  During the months of treatments, I received many gifts of encouragement - cards, stuffed animals, food, rides to treatment, prayers, etc.  Another very needed gift was the gift of laughter and fun, because there were lots of non-fun times, believe me.  Taking these things in mind, I have created several gifts for breast cancer patients over the years, including what I would call fun themed gifts.  Just added to my Etsy shop today is Cancer Kickin' Cowgirl Bear.  I love the cowboy/cowgirl theme and thought it would be fun to provide a gift that encourages a cancer patient to "kick cancer down the road".

Cancer Fighter Bear

Cancer Fighter Bear encourages someone to "knock out cancer".  Again, a little fun, some encouragement, something every cancer patient needs.

Cancer Fighting Super Hero
Everybody needs a super hero sometimes.  Cancer Fighting Super Hero can provide encouragement at a time when you need something "super" to help you get through it.

The main thing these gifts do, other than bring some levity to a difficult situation, is they remind the recipient that someone is thinking of them or praying for them.  Sometimes letting a person know you care is the best thing you can do for them.  Combine these bears with a personal note from you and you just might lift their spirits.

Come visit my Etsy shop anytime: bearfamilygifts.etsy.com.  I have more gifts for cancer patients and lots of other "beary" good things.

Hello Friends,

The first thing I want to say is Happy Anniversary to me!!  Thirty years ago today, I married the man who still puts up with me and my bears.  Couldn't have made a better choice.  He now participates in my business a little by making stethocopes for me.  I have more things in mind for him next year.

The second thing I want to say is that there are still a few things I could mail out in time for you to receive before Christmas.  Link to the Sample Sale items is below.  In addition to those items would be the following:

Red and Gold Christmas Angel Bear - one available

Panda Christmas Sweater Bear - one available

Holiday Sweater Bear - one available with green Christmas sweater only

Be sure to use your 15% coupon code if you decide to order one of these.

That's it!  Christmas is almost here!!!

Sample Sale

Have a good week!

My Sentiments - Exactly!!

When I first started dressing teddy bears and turning them into personalized gifts, I had in mind that the bears would represent special occasions and moments in someone's life.  They would be a sentimental gift that brought a special moment to (teddy bear) life.  We use pictures to capture special occasions and my thought was that by dressing the teddy bears in clothing suitable for the occasion, that they could capture those moments, too.  Here are a few of the teddy bear gifts and the ways that they capture the moment.

Basic Wedding Bears, Bride and Groom, personalized heart
Basic Wedding Bears
My first style of wedding bears, Basic Wedding Bears, are capturing the wedding moment, so to speak.  The personalized heart offers names, and the date, plus what I call a "blessing line", such as "United in Love", "Together Forever", etc.  Your choice as long as it fits.  The bride's dress comes in either white or ivory, and I try to match the colors of the flowers for the bouquet.  Groom is dressed in a black jacket and pants with a faux white shirt and black bowtie.  The clothing colors can be changed if you would like.  Very handy to display this in a prominent place and you will never forget your anniversary date.

Graduation Bear - Finance
Graduation Bear - Finance

The Graduation Teddy Bears collection are suitable for graduation from high school and college.  I offer a variety of themes for different majors and try to match the color of the gown.  I had one customer order a teddy bear dressed in a graduation gown and cap in the color of her son's high school robe.  But she did not want a tassel, she wanted to display her son's tassel with the bear.

Mother Daughter Bears
Mother Daughter Bears
When I became the mother of a baby girl, that was a precious moment and the culmination of a precious relationship.  This relationship brought to mind the Mother Daughter Bears.  I can dress the bears in colors of your choice and can put names on the heart where I cross-stitch my original poem.

Sister Angel Bear
Sister Angel Bear
Like many of my angel bears, the Sister Angel Bear is a way to capture a special relationship, this one between sisters.  My original poem is on the card attached to the bear's hand, and this one features a personalized heart with the sisters' names.

Karate Bear
Karate Bear

My kids were all very active in sports when they were in school, but now that they are out of high school, there are no more sports activities to attend.  That is one things I really miss about having a child in high school.  I offer a variety of Sporting Bears on my website just so the athlete or the parent can remember those times with great fondness.  Shown is the Karate Bear in white uniform and black belt.  The uniform can be made in other colors (we have done red and black, see options) and we can also do other colors of belts.  Other sporting bears, such as the Basketball Bear, Softball Bear, and Volleyball Bear have been used as gifts for senior girls.  We try to make the uniform as close as possible to the actual uniform and add names and numbers.  I have been told that the recipients love these bears.  I have one coach who has ordered from me for her senior softball players for several years.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a unique way to capture a moment in your life or the life of someone else, give me a shout and we'll see what we can do with a teddy bear to make that a reality.

If it Quacks Like a Duck.... You Might Need some Sunshine!!

It has been raining so much today, I feel like I should grow webbed feet, waddle outside, and quack away.  I could use a little sunshine, so I had a peek at some of my Sunflower Bear Gifts.  Here are just a few of these cheerful, sunny teddy bear gifts.

Sunflower Bear
Sunflower Bear

Sunflower Bear was my first sunflower teddy bear gift.  A cream colored sweater with a sunflower on the front, plus sunflower print fabric pants, and holding a bouquet of sunflowers.  A gift that would definitely cheer up someone.

Sunflower Lady Bear
Sunflower Lady Bear

Sunflower Lady Bear is a sweet lady that comes with her own watering can, and some sunflowers, of course.  She's just a fun gal that likes taking care of her garden.  Do you suppose she likes to grow sunflowers?  I imagine that she does!!

Sunflower Angel Bear
Sunflower Angel Bear

Sunflower Angel Bear is a smaller version of the lady bear.  Comes with her halo and angel wings, of course, as well as a tiny bouquet of sunflowers.

Mr. and Mrs. Sunflower Bear
Mr. and Mrs. Sunflower Bear
I love the look of a bright blue color mixed with the yellow sunflowers. The combination reminds me of the blue skies of Kansas over a field of sunflowers. Thus, when I saw this fabric, something good had to come of it!  Mr. and Mrs. Sunflower Bear are that something good.  Comes with the white watering can that is filled with small sunflowers.  Cute vest and matching bow tie for the Mr. and a pretty little dress for the Mrs.

Sunflower Buttons & Bow Bear
Sunflower Buttons & Bow Bear
Besides having an eye for colorful fabric, I also have an eye for novelty themed buttons.  So, how to use these adorable buttons with a teddy bear gift?  How about the Sunflower Buttons & Bow Bear?  We used a dark green vest for the background and then added the sunflower buttons, as well as a flower pot and some lady bugs.  Cute Stuff!!

Fall, Autumn, Harvest - It's All Good!

Today, September 23, 2014 is the first day of autumn according to my calendar.  The weather, and more importantly, the colors of fall have been around for awhile, now I can officially enjoy them!!  I love both the cooler weather and the magnificent colors of fall, so of course, seeing beautiful fall fabric brings teddy bear clothes to "life" in my mind.  Thus, the Harvest and Fall Decor Teddy Bears collection was started.

Scarecrow Bear
Scarecrow Bear
My very first fall decor item was the Scarecrow Bear.  I tried to make him look as much as possible like a scarecrow you would see in a field.  Jeans with a rope belt, tattered straw hat, straw broom, straw bale and pumpkins,  these are all common on a scarecrow and in fall decor.  But, probably because of the teddy bear's very cute face, he doesn't actually do a good job of scaring the crows away.  See black "crow" on the straw hat!

Trick or Treat Bear
Trick or Treat Bear

Another cute fall teddy bear is the Trick or Treat Bear.  Jack-o-lantern sweater, Halloween print pants, a "Lone Ranger" style mask and a little bucket for the treats.  Centerpiece for a Halloween party,or just some cute decor (not for children under the age of 13).

Pumpkin Sweater Bear
Pumpkin Sweater Bear

If you just like the look of pumpkins, and I do, you might like the Pumpkin Sweater Bear.  The sweater with it's pumpkins on the front and the pumpkin that the bear holds is great enough for a pumpkin decor lover. But the bright orange pumpkins against the black background on the pants is absolutely eye-popping!

Harvest Angel Bear
Harvest Angel Bear
I admit it, the Harvest Angel Bear was borne from the fabric.  See the fabric, fall in love with the fabric, find a way to use it.  I love the bright oranges and reds, mixed with gold and green, some of those gorgeous fall colors that fill my senses.  She had to have a pumpkin and orange ribbon and bow, just to add more color to the ensemble.

Thanksgiving Sweater Bear
Thanksgiving Sweater Bear

The Thanksgiving Sweater Bear is on the lighter side.
The pants are more of those lovely fall colors, but the sweater depics a funny looking turkey.  I would send this as a gift to someone if you want to make them chuckle.

Thanksgiving Angel Bear
Thanksgiving Angel Bear

Last, but not least, the Thanksgiving Angel Bear.  If you wanted to send a more serious Thanksgiving greeting to someone, or use this a decor in your home, this little angel just might do the trick.  Another "love this fabric" moment came when I saw this fabric on the bolt.  I know the fabric is hard to see in this picture, so take a look at the close up I have provided on my website.  The words are a simple thanksgiving prayer surrounding drawings of harvest on the farm.

Bear-ly Poetic, Teddy Bear Gifts with Poetry

Yesterday, I revealed my quirky humor side, today is the thoughtful, compassionate side that I express through poetry.  These are not long, involved poems, but short and to the point, most of them point to God as the helper in times of difficulty.  I will give you just a few examples of the poetry included with some of my Angel Bears.

Kailie's Angel Bear
Kailie's Angel Bear
One of my very first poems was written for Kailie's Angel Bear.  There is a story behind this bear.  A friend of mine had a granddaughter named Kailie.  I do not remember her exact age, but I believe around the age of 10.  Doctor's discovered that she had leukemia, and while she and her doctors and her family fought hard, she did not make it.  My heart was moved by her fight as I heard of her story from her grandmother.  The poem, the angel bear (my first) started to unfold in my mind as I ached for this family.  The poem reads: "God sends his angels to protect and guard, To lift us up when life is hard.  They watch over us and pray for us too.  This gift is to remind you of God's angel for you."

Pearl Angel Bear, breast cancer patient gift
Pearl Angel Bear

A few years later, I was going through cancer treatment for breast cancer.  Pearl Angel Bear and the poem that comes with her was inspired by the support that I received during that time.  This poem reads:

Dear friend, I'm here to walk with you
Through this journey that you face,
With listening ear and helping hand
And a measure of God's grace.

To comfort you, to encourage you,
To help you do what you must do.
To share your laughter and your tears,
I'm here, dear friend, for you.

The voice of this poem is that of the caring friend to the breast cancer patient.

At the beginning of my cancer treatment, I had major surgery.  If you have had surgery, you know that they do not want you wearing any jewelry, including your wedding band.  Well, I couldn't get my wedding ring off, so went to a jeweler to have it cut off.  In the process of doing this, the kind woman who was helping was asking why I wanted it cut off.  When I told her it was for cancer surgery, she was very sympathetic and said she would pray for me.  As if that was not enough, while I was in the hospital, she actually called me to see how I was doing!!!  I have never seen her again, but I was touched beyond measure by her kindness, which inspired the poem that comes with You're An Angel Bear.
You're An Angel Bear
You're An Angel Bear
 This poem reads:

Words cannot express what your kindness meant to me.
May this angel make you smile and may God bless you abundantly.
Thanks for being an "angel" to me.

Coming up next... some of my lighter side poetry and accompanying teddy bear gifts.

Bear-ly Quirky Teddy Bear Gifts at Bear Family Gifts, LLC

It is probably safe to say that I have a rather quirky sense of humor.  I can't explain it, or defend it, it just "is what it is".  Sometimes that quirkiness spills over into teddy bear clothes and accessories.  Some of my newest quirky teddy bear gifts appear in the Get Well Teddy Bear Gifts.

Sick Day Bear
Sick Day Bear
Sick Day Bear is quite adorable in her pink robe and pink slippers.  The quirky part is the thermometer in her mouth, and hankie in one hand and the prescription bottle in the other.  The thermometer and the prescription bottle are actually novelty buttons, cute as a, well, button!  The hankie is made from a scrap of fabric.  Why do I think this is cute and funny?  Because it is a miniature form of a real sick person who has decided they need to stay in bed.  Just might make a sick person smile and brighten their day.

Nightshirt Bear
Nightshirt Bear

I like the Nightshirt Bear because it is a little old fashioned, sort of looks like the father in "The Night Before Christmas" story.  He's got some character, and the nightshirt is cute, too.  This is really designed for a guy who needs some cheering up.

Hula Girl Bear
Hula Girl Bear

Now I'm going to share with you some past quirky teddy bear gifts.  Hula Girl Bear is quite the entertainment.  Like the wood version of the coconut shell bra?
Menopausal Angel Bear
Menopausal Angel Bear

Menopause Angel Bear represents real life to menopausal women.  I'm there, I understand the hot flashes and the teary moments, thus this angel bear comes with a small fan (that really works with a battery) and a small packet of tissue (real thing).  I also wrote a poem for this one.

Good Mornin' Mama Bear is just for fun.  She is a composite of various accessories that indicate it is morning.
Good Mornin' Mama Bear
Good Mornin' Mama Bear
The bear is dressed in a colorful house dress and has curlers in her "hair" (my teddy bears have fur, not hair, but we try to make it work).  She's got her teddy bear slippers and glasses, as well.  Also included is a tiny cup of "coffee", and a newspaper.  I think she' almost ready to start her day!  (says the lady writing this blog in her jammies!!!!! - the advantage of working from home.)

New Teddy Bear Gifts to See!!

Inspirational Teddy Bear Angel Gift
Inspirational Angel Bear
I am very excited to be able to present 2 new angel teddy bears, with more to come.  We've been busy in the teddy bear den, whipping up some wonderful fabrics into beautiful clothing for our teddy bears.  Come see the Inspirational Angel Bear.   When I saw this rich, brown fabric with scripture written on it, I had to buy it and find a way to use it.  What better way to incorporate words from the bible than to make it an angel.  This would be a great gift of encouragement to someone going through a difficult time, a serious illness, or just a way to say "I'm thinking of you, and so is God".

Pink Ribbon and Butterflies Angel Teddy Bear Gift for breast cancer patients
Pink Ribbon and Butterflies Angel Bear
Another beautiful fabric that I couldn't resist is the pink ribbon fabric with a black background and with butterflies.  I love making encouraging and caring gifts for breast cancer patients, having been through breast cancer twice myself.  I know what it means to know that people are thinking of you and praying for you.  Sometimes, that's all your friends and family can do.  I love the colors of this fabric against the white teddy bear.  White teddy bears are very hard to find these days, so what I have in stock will probably be all that is available, therefore these will be a limited item.  Meet Pink Ribbon and Butterflies Angel Bear.

I confess to being a fabriholic.  Many times I see a fabric and simply MUST figure out a way to use it.  These are two examples of that obsession.

Basketball Bears As Gifts

Basketball Bears in uniforms
Basketball Team - Go Colts!!

I love college basketball.  I can't wait until the season starts, look forward to the final tournament, and am always a little sad when it's over.

With the tournament already starting, it made me think of the many Basketball Bears I have made over the years.  Many customers have asked me to make teddy bears as gifts for their seniors to present to them on Senior Night or at a senior banquet.  (I believe all of the bears have been made for female basketball players.)  We try to make the bears' uniforms as close as possible to the human players uniforms, including a team name on the front, and player name on the back along with jersey number.  You can see a variety of the uniforms we have made on my Gallery of Teddy Bears page.  We do other sports as well, all Sporting Teddy Bears can be seen at this link.

Angels Spread Their Wings

Two Guardian Angels and Kailie's Angel with poem in the middle

If you have looked through my website (if not, please do - http://www.bearfamilygifts.com/index.html), you will see that I offer a wide variety of dressed and decorated teddy bears.  But these angels pictured have always been my favorite.  There's something about their white satin dresses that flow softly around them, and the gold trim just adds an elegant look to the ensemble.  Probably the main reason they are my favorite is because people send them to family and friends who need encouragement, comfort from knowing that someone cares, a reminder that God is there for them.  These three went to a family who is experiencing a very difficult medical situation.  I hope these angel bears serve as a reminder to this family of the friends who are thinking of them and care about what they are going through.  In the picture, the Guardian Angel Bears are on the outside, and Kailie's Angel Bear with the poem is in the middle.  You can see all of my angel bears (and bunnies and a lamb) on my Angel Bears page.  And yes, there is a wide variety of angels, too.  Some in other colors of satin, others in prints for a themed gift.  They would all like to spread their wings and take a personalized message of encouragement to someone.

Finally Fall in The Midwest

I saw a tree on our street yesterday that had turned it's beautiful dark red fall color.  Finally! I thought, fall has arrived.  I love the cooler weather and gorgeous colors of God's nature.

The fall colors are so hard for me to pass up in the fabric store, that I quit trying.  I took those beautiful fall colors and turned them into clothes teddy bears, no big surprise.

The Harvest Angel Bear was just a delight to put together, and she would look quite nice as part of your fall decorations as well.

The Scarecrow Bear  is a fun little guy, with hay bale and pumpkins from the farm, he even has a little black bird perched on his hat.

All of my current Harvest and Fall Gifts and Decor can be found by clicking on the underlined words.  I hope to add another one or two in a  few days.

Featured Teddy Bear of the Week - Anyone a Basketball Fan??

Basketball Bear, dress a bear in your favorite team's colorsIf you are a college basketball fan, you've probably been enjoying the NCAA post season tournament these past two weekends. We watch it very closely in our house, at least some of us do. It is my favorite sporting event of all time. This year, I am fortunate to have the team that I cheer for in the Final Four. My Kansas Jayhawks made it by the skin of their teeth, but they made it!! That is a BIG deal in the world of college basektball.

So, with basketball on my mind, I thought I would feature our Basketball Bear this week. This is our latest uniform, fashioned after the actual uniform of the recipient. We have a small space to work with, but can still get quite a few details in. In this case, the stripes at the bottom of the shorts, as well as along the sides of the shirt and shorts, which doesn't show in this picture. We do the lettering on the front and back by hand and attach to the shirt. The front shows the name of the school, with the player's last name and uniform number on the back. We do what we can to make a miniature version of the actual uniform. This makes a fun gift.

Our customer who ordered this product said, "You had her (customer's daughter) email you pictures of the sport uniform, took a detailed description of the colors and design, and from that created a masterful, beautifully handcrafted bear* in the St. Brendan b-ball uniform, complete with the boy's name!!!"

If you are looking for a special, personalized gift for a basketball player, I think that person would enjoy this keepsake from their days on the basketball court.

*Please note that only the uniform is handcrafted by us, not the actual bear.

Come join me in a game of tag!

Oh my goodness, my blog has been tagged! A blogging friend of mine is involved in a game of blog tag. I have to tell you 5 things about myself and then tag 5 friends. So here goes....

1) The name of my business is Bear Family Gifts. Do you know why?? I suppose because I sell teddy bears and it is a family friendly business with gifts for the whole family would be a good guess. But, actually, it is because I was once a member of a Bear Family! My maiden name was Bear! Can you believe it? I wanted to incorporate my maiden name into my teddy bear business and came up with Bear Family Gifts. I couldn't resist that little play on words.

2)I am a sports junkie! I can't play any sport worth a lick, but I love to watch or listen on the radio to football, basketball, and sometimes baseball. I am enjoying watching basketball almost all day long right now with the NCAA tournament. My favorite team is the KU Jayhawks. Go Hawks!!

3)At one time in my life, I left a job because they were getting a computer!! Now that was back in the "old" days, when we did our bookkeeping by hand, I was so afraid of computers that I left that job for another. A few years later, that business also incorporated a computer, but I was ready to tackle the challenge by then. And look at me now, can't stand to go a day without doing something on my computer. My kids don't believe me when I tell them how afraid I once was of a computer.

4)I enjoy writing poetry and singing in the church choir. Some of my poems are featured with my teddy bear angels, as well as I have some of my longer poems on my website, http://www.bearfamilygifts.com/poetry.html.

5)Last, and most importantly I am a Christian, a breast cancer survivor, a wife and mother of 3 teenagers. Life is full and always interesting.

Here are my friends that I am tagging:
Crystal Creates
Cinna-Minnies
Handmade Doll Clothes
Ragtree Funky Sculpture
Crafters BS

Tag - you're it!

Have fun!

Bunny or Bear??

Happy Easter Bear with bunny ears
This turned out too cute not to share. It is the only new Easter gift I will be adding this year as I am running out of time. But, I did think my Happy Easter Bear turned out very cute.

So what do you think? Is this a bear or a bunny? Does it really matter??? If it's too cute for you to resist buying, visit the link and purchase today! Last day to order for Easter gifts is March 14th. This gift comes with a chocolate bunny and a miniature basket of Easter eggs with a little yellow chick just "peeping" over the rim of the basket.
Easter is March 23 this year - seems very early!!
